Travel to Namibia from UK on a budget?

Hi there.

My friend and I are considering a holiday in Namibia around October/November this year.

We've just started the process of searching for flights and I'm quite shocked at how expensive they are from the UK (Manchester). Prices are around £725-750 return in October.

These are flights I've searched on travelsupermarket.com, which I always find digs out the cheapest.

Does anyone know of any other possible and cheaper routes into Namibia, that we could work into our holiday, rather than flying directly to Windhoek?

Alternatively, anyone know any flight specialists who may be able to get us a cheaper fare?

Thanks!

Try an Air Namibia flight out of Frankfurt, you would need a connecting flight from Manchester, but they usually work out the best value. Expedia or EBookers will do a flight originating outside the UK, but I woud think that the £700 mark was about right.

Good Luck

I sometimes find flying emirates or Qatar to johannesburg and then air Namibia to Windhoek works ou well value wise. Takes a while though but if you are not in a big rush it is worth checking out.

Just a note: The flights from Europe to souther Africa are cheap, they are half price from what you would pay from the US to southern Africa. The cheapest I just found was $2.200 and I even got a quote of $4,600.

Hi,

Let's be realistic - flight prices are determined by supply and demand.

Lots of competition/passengers = low prices.

Few passengers = high prices.

How many people per year want to fly from manchester to Namibia? 50? 200?

Every night, about 2000 fly from London to Johannesburg (or Cape Town). So thats where to look for cheap flights, and THEN make your way to Namibia, by local flight, bus or car.

There are cheap buses from Cape Town - takes about 18 hours.

But then, how will you get about this vast country? Look at overland tours. Don't even think about hitch-hiking.

Thanks for your replies. I was considering whether flying into Jo'burg or Cape Town would be an option, would be nice to see both those cities again so could be a good incorporation into a holiday in southern Africa.

We'd be looking at car hire once there (hitch-hiking would never have been an option!), and really, what we're hoping to do is try and keep our international travel costs down so that we can afford to spend more once in Namibia.

We're also now looking at Uganda for gorilla-trekking and other southern Africa countries as holiday options (have been to South Africa a couple of times).

I'll keep on researching!

A day with the gorillas is about the same cost as a flight to Africa....

I understand it's around £330 to get the gorilla permit, Peter.

It's all relative though, isn't it, based on how valuable you see the experience and what you want to spend your money on?

I need to weigh up if spending so much on travel to Namibia is worth it for me while I don't have as much money as I would like, when there are so many incredible experiences to be had throughout Africa.

£330 is about the same as a flight to Africa (according to your first post), and you started by saying how shocked you were at that cost, and were looking for cheaper alternatives.

As you say, if you think its worth it, then fine. But don't be shocked by the price of flights - they are the cheapest they have ever been, and a real bargain.

I'll have to keep this short as i am out of the office and my lap top is in death throes due to overheating, hence writing on my phone...but i have been sourcing flights from London to Windhoek today for a couple on a tiny budget for beginning of October. Best deals i found was air Kenya to johannesburg and then the intercape to Windhoek approx 600 pounds. It is 24hours on the bus though. Prices for October and November do seem higher this year than previous years. The gorillas are still on my hit list...one day! Gemma Dry - Owner - Discover Namibia - Safaris

Thanks so much for that helpful info Gemma. We may look at overland trips that maybe bring us in and out of Namibia, that could be one way of avoiding high flight prices but still travelling for the sake of our holiday rather than for trying to keep the travel costs down.

Peter, it's about £750 for the flight to Namibia (not around £330!), which was shocking to me as that's not far off a flight to Oz!

I think it's fair enough to be shocked if you've only just started researching and didn't realise how much the flights were.

Bearing in mind that Uganda isn't likely to see many more visitors from the UK than Namibia, the flights there are more around the £500 mark. Throw in the gorilla permit and we are only just above the flight cost to Namibia.
