Road conditions after recent rains

Hi,

We arrive next Tuesday(19th) for a self drive trip.

Car booked is a Yaris. After 2 days in Windhoek we then drive to Sesriem for 2 days, then Swakopmund (2days) then into Etosha for two weeks.

Question is will the recent heavy rain give us any problems getting around?

Pretty much all the roads are open again now in the areas you are travelling through.

Windhoek to Sesriem --- roads are bumpy but ok.

Sesriem to Swakop --- This road has been pretty damaged in places so it will be extremely bumpy in a Yaris. I would suggest some sort of cushion to sit on especially if you suffer from numb bottoms. Take it slowly.

I am not sure if they have graded the really bad bit yet, probably not, but I have some people arriving from that way today so I can find out. Not that it will make any difference really as it is the only road you can take, but it's nice to be prepared in advance mentally, and leave longer for the trip than you would have.

Are you heading directly to Etosha for two weeks, or going via Damaraland?

If you are heading via Brandberg and Uis to the Khorixas area a small section of the road was badly damaged where the river came over so you will have to take that very slowly. Maybe it has been tidied up a bit by now, but last week it was pretty awful, so just go gently that way.

Other rain related bits that won't affect you but might others are:-

Kunene River Lodge is closed until May at the earliest due to the rising Kunene River.

Walvis Bay has major tap water restrictions (only a few hours a day) due to the Kuiseb River coming down and apparently damaging the pipes and bore holes.

Thanks for that, after Swakopmund we are going to erongo wilderness lodge, then Mushara Bush camp.

Apreciate the cushion tip :-)

Then you will be fine.

Take the slightly longer route to Erongo Wilderness Lodge via the C33 and although it is longer you will cut out a lot of horrible bumpy driving!
