Driving licence requirements

Will we be OK to drive in Namibia with just a standard UK licence (photocard + paper bit)?

Thanks!

Yes that is absolutely fine. As long as the writing is in English any driving licence is fine.

Personally I've never been asked for the paper bit.

Yes fine but make sure you keep it with you at all times when driving as it is illegal not to.

I forgot to bring my driving licence once, but got by with my International Driving Permit.

Not a recommended way of travelling, but sometimes its useful to have a "spare", and it only costs about £10.

"To drive legally while in Namibia, visitors staying more than a few weeks need an international driving permit. International driving permits must be obtained prior to leaving the U.S. and are available from either the American Automobile Association or the American Automobile Touring Alliance. Short-term visitors do not need an international driving permit; a valid U.S. driver's license is sufficient."

From the US State Dept. website, in case this helps!

The above is correct.

If you are over on holiday your standard driving licence (so long as the writing is in English) will suffice.

If you are staying longer, coming to work or if you extend over your 90 days then it is a good idea to have the international licence.

A foreign/international driver’s license is invalid, unless:

The license has been issued in English; or

The license contains a photograph and signature of the card holder

In the case that your driver’s license is not in English, please note that both the national and international driving license have to be brought along at all times. The international driving license is valid only in conjunction with the national driving license.

Kindly make certain that these requirements are adhered to in order to ensure that the insurance is valid in the terms of the rental agreement. Vehicles cannot be handed over to clients who do not comply with these regulations mentioned above.
