camping diy in namibia

Hi all,

we are planning a trip to namibia in july for 5 - 6 weeks and have been looking around the multitude of 4x4 hire companies, the one I have looked at and looks promising is this one http://www.namibia4x4hire.com/index.html it seems to tick all the boxes as it has zero excess in the price as well as winscreen and trye insurance, any input appreciated, also what could we resonably expect to cover in 5 weeks of travelling. i am not worried about the driving as we lived in Ethiopia for some years and also drove Addis to Watamu in kenya.

thx in advance for any info

Hi agy,

The roads in Namibia are way better than most of the other places you have visited. One school of thought says you don't really need a 4x4 other than for comfort in ground clearance sometimes.

That said lots of folks hire those with a Tent or tents on top so go and enjoy yourselves.

You could reasonably cover most of the country in five weeks, even at my stop and see everything pace. To be honest unless Fish River Canyon is your thing there is not much else south of Keetmanshoop to delay you. Luderitz?

That frees up all the more enticing bits to be taken slower and with less kms.

Sossusvlei and the dunes are on most folks lists and then swing up via Solitaire to Walvis Bay, Swakopmund (Quad bike city!!) Damaraland, & with your nerves even Kunene/Kaokaland. Etosha of course and even Caprivi strip. Distances are long but with good tar it soon gets covered.

So there you go. My input FWIW..

Full summer hols, eh? If you get as far as the Caprivi strip you may as well add in Victoria Falls if they appeal. We did some long drives but they were relatively easy going.

Have to agree with Mfuwe. We didn't go to the southern sector either. We'll save that for a short trip in from South Africa at a later date! Plenty to keep you going elsewhere.

We did our Namibia trip in a VW Polo and got everywhere we wanted to go. We didn't have the luxury of a 4x4 when we lived in Kenya so are quite good at avoiding potholes and getting up and down washed out hills. Roads are much better than Ethiopia/East Africa though and we didn't have to slow down too often to negotiate difficult bits.
