Himba Village - What to expect

Traveling to the Himba village in a few weeks and I'm wondering if there is anything to keep in mind when meeting the indigenous people? General etiquette to be mindful of? When I was visiting a tribe in the amazon last Fall our guide advised us not to give money or gifts. They didnt want to teach their children to beg. What is the culture like here?

Don't take Western things like pens, paper etc etc. The Himba children don't attend school in the way we do. No sweets, they don't have dentists. Also, take all your rubbish away, don't leave plastic bottles etc, they don't know what to do with it and it causes litter. Basically it is one of those...take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints scenarios.

Are you going with a guide? He or she will explain the etiquette.

There may be something like flour or sugar which you can bring to them, but, again, the guide will know for sure.

A guide is helpful because you're not supposed to walk in certain areas, like between the chief's hut and the middle (it makes more sense when they explain it). Our guide did not encourage money or gifts, but did encourage us to buy the local handicrafts, which we did. We found some nice traditional shellwork and quill necklaces and bracelets we really liked. We learned a few Himba phrases, which seemed appreciated.
