Swakopmund - must-do activities

Hi all - have been trawling the forum for several weeks - so much great advice! The lovely Gemma has created an itinerary for a 2-week self-drive safari for my partner and I, late January next year - very excited about it!

My question is - we have requested three nights in Swakopmund - what should we do? Whilst I know many people suggest not spending so long in Swakop, we just want to smell the sea air for a few days, so this will be a good rest from driving for us.

If we were to pick just two amazing activities, what should we do? Should we take a scenic flight? Should we go quad biking? Would love some recommendations from the people who know.

Three nights is only 2 days so not much time to be bored.

What to do depends on your inclinations and interests. If you are into noisy polluting activities then Quad Biking and Dune buggy riding will suit you.

If you are more relaxed and looking for Natural activities to see the wildlife then there is something there for you too.

Walvis Bay has lots of boat trips to find dolphins and whales and some of these are good fun and include a Champagne and Oyster lunch aboard.

Or a 4x4 trip to Sandwich Bay for birdlife?

A living desert tour to see the smaller critturs that live there.

Or just take your own car somewhere quiet, park up with a coolbox and picnic, and smell the roses.

Something for all pockets and interests. Gawd, you could even go shopping!

We did the quad biking- nice but not great. You ride a 4 wheeler for about 3 hours up and down and around the dunes.

Sand surfing was fun. You get a surf board or sled to slide down the taller dunes, fun but gets old after a while. We did a combination of the two.

Our favorite trip was the seal kayaking out of walvis bay with Eco tours. Amazing few hours and not too challenging. The lunch on the beach was simple but good. Pictures with the seals playing with your paddles or crossing under your kayak. Hundreds up close. Also spent time at the sea salt mining company. Saw jackals out on the sand bars and the birds were amazing.

We did some shopping, but the local market can be a high pressure sell. We took pictures around the lighthouse and out where the waves were breaking over the rocks. Nice little walk.

The desert tour is supposed to be fun.

Eat at kucki's, very neat place

Swak is a nice break from the driving and animal viewing

We drove to Walvis Bay and took a catamaran tour.

It was loads of fun

Would definitely recommend doing that.

Kayaking with seals seconded - a great way to spend a morning.

Whether you think you are interested in crystals or not - a visit to the Crystal Gallery (tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g298357-d2…) is a must.

An aerial flip (2h30) over the desert and back along the coast via Sossusvlei is money well spent. That was our favourite adventure of our previous Namibian trip. We used Bushbaby and was very impressed with their professional service.

The food at the restaurants in Swakop is to die for. Our favourites - The Jetty (looks dodgy from outside, but is awesome), The Tug, Kucki's, were all well worth visiting with good food and reasonable prices. We forgot to book for supper the one night and could not find a single place to dine - even though there are a huge number of restaurants in Swakop! We ended up going to the Hansa Hotel, where we had glorious food, but more on the expensive side.
