While i was doing research of Reunion island, there was not a lot of information in English. We spent 12 days in Reunion and 10 days in Mauritius. After our trip, I felt we could easily spend 14 days in Reunion!
Our first 5 days, we used public transportation from St. Pierre to Cilaos then overnight to Piton des Neiges. You can do a 5 days track in this cirque but since we don’t have much time, we only did 2 days highlight track. It was worth every sweat and hiking in the dark for an amazing sunrise. Booking the gite in advance is a must!
We then pick up our car for the next 7 days. We only drive automatic and we rented with Enterprise which was good and convenient.
We spent two days on the other side of the island, overnight at grand llet and day hike to La Nouvelle ( hike in only village, part of the 5 days cirque, you can also do a mini 2 days hike to Marla and La Nouvelle) you can also take bus but make sure you get the time table and coordinate the schedule. Bus is cheap and on time.
2 days near pition de la Fournaise, active volcano hike, really good experience , visited volcano museum! We learnt a lot before our hike
3 days near St. Pierre: snorkel right from st. Pierre public beach, so many fish and very safe. We love lava tunnel tour, very unique experience, and a few hours in St Dennis before returning our car at the airport for our 9pm flight.
You can check out my blog for details
Hope you have as much fun as we did.
Not many people speak English but maybe google translate will help
Get up early for all the hikes, as clouds rolled in before 9 or 10 am.
west coast is usually sunnier and warmer than east coast and mid of the island.
Food and grocery is kind of expensive for us we are from Canada. We usually buy fruit and vegetables from road side stand, instead of supermarkets. Baguette and wine are reasonable 😜 we cook most of the time as restaurants are expensive
