Car Rental / vehicle transfers

We are travelling to Uganda in July and want to book a 4x4 with driver for transfers to Bwindi, Kibale forest & Queen Elizabeth National park.

How much should this cost?

Our travel agent has quoted a price of $323 a day ($200 for the 4 x 4, $58 a day for fuel, $20 for repairs and plus $45 a day for a driver/guide.

Does anybody have any recommendations on reputable companies and costs?

Where is your Travel Agent based? Venus? How can you charge for 'repairs'??? Ridiculous!!!

If in Ireland or Europe then of course they are thinking of a number, adding their slice and simply passing on the job to someone in Uganda.

Your request does not say so but I assume from your itinerary that you are going for wildlife? If so just arrange a local firm to put this together for you.

I was out there over Christmas/New year. My 4x4, with Driver cost much less than that. I hired in a specialist guide (one of the best naturalists around)for $70 per day and paid $500 for fuel over 28 days, that's $20 per day??

So Guide/Driver and Fuel for a normal but excellent driver is $65 per day. The car should cost no more than $150 so you are looking at $210 MAX for the package. You will need to add Park Fees and any permits (Gorilla/Chimp trekking)to this figure but this will be per person as will your lodgings.

You are leaving it a bit late for July but try 'talking' to Hassan Mutebe at accessuganda@utlonine.co.ug or Peace at caasafaris@africaonline.co.ug . Both of these people do a reasonable job for the money or you could try my chap emmygongo@yahoo.com and tell him "H.E." sent you.

Not venus I'm afraid. We're booking directly through an agent in Uganda.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Well that does surprise me. Please let me know if the three recommendations I sent can change the playing field a little. I would be very surprised if they cannot.

I have been told that Uganda is suffering a drop in bookings due to the crunch. Let's see if it is true!

Thanks again Mfuwe you are a wonderful source of knowledge about Uganda. I went to the forum to ask a similar question to Mary about getting a guide without going through a tour company and I will definately contact your recommendations and see what they can do. BTW our trip in Uganda is now up to 10 nights and looks like being 2 nights Jinja 2 Kibale, 2 QEP 2 Bwindi, 2 Kampala. As you can see I have taken note of your previous advise to not try and rush the trip. Not sure if I should try for Murchison Falls as well? As we say in Australia thanks mate!

I really would leave Murchison falls this time. The road was so bad Fort Portal to Hoima that it took us hours.

Some tours are actually routing back to Kampala from FP and then heading north up the tar. Not quicker but easier on the springs.
