Hi to all oldtimers,
I plan to spend five weeks in Uganda/Rwanda in January - February 2013 and intend to rent a car for part of this time.
I have been in touch with several rental agencies and received conflicting information. Here my questions:
1) is it necessary to hire a driver? Some agencies insist, others wave it off. I intend to participate anyway in whatever lodges offer as game-drive in the various parks - that way I can concentrate on watching and not on driving.
2) is it necessary to hire a 4-wheel drive (Rav4 is on offer for a decent price) or is a salon car (Corolla is on offer) sufficient? It was pointed out to me that a 2WD is ok during the dry season and outside of the parks.
I don't want to spend any more than I absolutely have to, but when getting stuck in axle-deep sand in a 2WD one wishes having made a different decision.
Re finding your way - the "International Travel Map" Scale 1:550,000 looks very informative, as do the detailed maps in LP and Bradt. Are those trustworthy in your opinion?
Thanks for any advise!
