What can I cover in 2-3 weeks and how do get there

I am trying to organise a trip to India but I am getting bogged down with all the information available and places and how long I need in each and most of all, how to get to the places. I have about 2-3 weeks.

I am not a big fan of sitting in a car for thirty hours at a time. Here is what I want to see, but can some people please recommend how to get to these places easily (some driving is OK of course) and which airlines are best and safest (I am afraid of flying, but will suffer it to travel when its simply too long a journey).

I intend on flying into Dehli and out of Mumbai just so there is less flying, or need to return to Delhi to leave India).

So arrive Delhi. I want to see the following:

North:

Agra

Udipur

Jodhipur

Mumbai (have to fly out of here anyway so can do this at the end)

(please tell me if there is anything I am missing in this region and also how I should travel from these destinations? Fly or drive or plane and what are the distances?)

South:

Goa (maybe or straight to Kerala?)

Kerala.

(how do I get there from Udipur/Mumbai etc)

I am looking for a nice laid back but fun beach atmosphere, I am talking as in Koh Samui or Phuket so am I likely to find this anywhere in India or should I take a side trip to maldives or something?

Are there any nice places in either Kerala or Goa with a good pool scene etc?

Also how far is Goa from Kerala? Would I fly or drive?

On the northern part of your trip:

Agra needs one full day. I would suggest doing Jaipur next. This is not on your list but is a major tourist destination in Rajasthan. I would allow two days here. Next Jodhpur - one day to see the sights. Then to Udaipur, where one day lets you see most things. Then fly to Mumbai.

Travelling Delhi, Agra, Jaipur to Jodhpur can either be done by train or car. Hiring a car and driver for the whole journey is popular and inexpensive. Train travel is other people's preferred method of travel in India. Train travel in India should be experienced at lease once.

Approximate distances and times by car:

Delhi- Agra - 200km 3-4 hours.

Agra - Jaipur - 230km 4-5 hours

Jaipur - Jodhpur - 330km 6 hours

Jodhpur - Udaipur - 250km 5 hours

Jodhpur to Udaipur has to be done by car, but it means you can stop at the beautiful Ranakpur Temples on the way and possibly the magnificent Kumbulgarh fort.

You have enough time and quite a lot can be done without a whirlwind schedule.

1. Delhi>Agra>Jaipur>Udaipur>Varanasi (9 days)>

2. Kovalam>Allepey>Kochi (6 days)>

3. Goa (4 days)>

4.Mumbai (2 days and fly out)

Thanks so much for your help. I will definately visit that other place I missed out then..."Jaipur"

Chrella, is there a direct flight from Udipur-Goa? I could not find anything on Kingfisher, or do I have to fly via Mumbai or back through Delhi first to get to Goa?

There is no direct flight between Udaipur and Goa, you must have to change flight either from Delhi or from Mumbai.

Nobody has mentioned when this trip will be ?

Some of the places recommended are very anti social, verging on hostile, when its hot. And please dont think about driving yourself.

If its between October and June that you are considering

Fly to Delhi, car or train to Corbett NP for 4-5 days

Train to Agra for 1 day to see Taj Mahal returning to Delhi same night.

Fly Delhi - Goa for a nice relaxing beach holiday for a couple of weeks, along the lines of Thailand.

Fly back to Delhi from Goa, and on to home from there.

Simple return tickets are costing less. Good connecting flight times from loads of cheap flight operators, no hectic schedules.

Relax and enjoy your time.

India has much to offer, but if you try to do too much you will end up exhausted. Better to enjoy it, and come back again, to see other places.

Hi,

Agree with the comment above....time of the year is a vital factor.

Accordingly, you can choose between deserts (rajasthan, viz Jaipur/Udaipur//Jodhpur/ Jaisalmer etc), highlands (Himalayas, at Shimla/Nainital/Ladakh etc), seaside (Goa/Kerela, etc), culture/history (Agra/Haridwar, etc).

Then you have offbeat places, which can be done if planned well in advance.

Accordingly, you could seek more suggestions in this forum itself.

Enjoy.
