One difference is the route they play on , in terms of luxury they are both on similar lines. However just the route wise I like Maharaja express

The Maharjas Express is double the price of the Deccan Odyssey, so there must be a differance in service levels etc?

Did anyone come to a firm conclusion about these trains?,its driving me mad,if you look on railbookers there are even more of them!,I am reaching the conclusion that The Maharaja Express, royal India route is the best but too expensive for us.We don't care for the Deccan's route so it might be back to plan A ...Palace on Wheels. Why do they make everything so confusing?

Check the new website of the maharajas express. WWW.The-maharajas.com. Much improved itineraries and new prices with confirmed departures.

The luxury train journeys in India are along heritage trails requiring travelers to get off the train for excursions, some meals. The trains are parked along railway sidings in the proximity of main stations, which are not attractive to stroll around when the train is stationary.

They are not like the Inverness- Kyle of Lockalsh kind of journey where you can sit back and enjoy breathtaking scenery.

So if you are not an ardent rail enthusiast, a customized holiday incorporating many of the regal experiences maybe a preferred option.

The Deccan Odyssey is in a league of its own when it comes to luxury travel. 20+ luxury saloons, private butlers, fine dining, the works; just read through www.maharajas-express-india.com - not bad for a $300/Day coach. Luxury wise, I guess it should do a little better than the Deccan.

Maharajas Express was awarded first runners up award by the Conde Nast Readers Choice Travel Award 2011 in the ceremony held in London. Maharajas Express added another feather in its cap as it bagged the first runner up award in the Specialist Train Operators Category. www.the-maharajas.com
