Travellers cheques in India

We are touring around for 16 days in April and will be taking TCs, we usually take British Pound TCs, are these ok or are American Express better?

UKP & USD TCS both are OK. To change TC is little difficult and also rates are low. There are many ATMs available in India even though small places. You should bring TC + Credit Card + Cash combination means mix.

Indeed if touring around do take mixture of cash alternatives. T/C's no problem in tourist resorts such as Goa but can be difficult in cities.

Is it not possible to change TCs in banks? We won't be travelling to remote areas.

I was in a bank in Trivandrum changing cash and asked them if they also changed T/C's and they said no. Hopefully someone will clarify which banks will and which banks wont but might be a case of trailing around banks.

In Delhi as well as other big cities banks are encashing Travellors cheque easily but it should be branch who is dealing in foreign exchange. Some of bank's branches are not foreign exchange accepting branch.

05 & 04 star hotels can also change TC s as they are also authorized to accept forgein exchange.

Thanks for that Hari, you have put my mind at rest. Don't like carrying too much money around and in the past have had problems with getting money off my debit card even though I have informed my bank before travelling.

Agree with the advice of others (take a mix) but just wanted to suggest trying hotels to change TCs if you get stuck not finding a bank that will change them.

If this news isn't too late for you, take a look at this link posted in the Goa forum:

Did see the news about ICI Bank, have now ordered our TCs, definately not going to use my debit card, too many charges and frightening moments when trying to get cash on my last day in Goa to pay all my bills before leaving. Don't want to be spending time ringing the bank, too many other things to do on this trip.
