Trains at unsociable hours... safe?

Trying to connect up some dots in India, it seems some of the express trains that we would like to catch would either arrive or depart at unsociable hours...

What do you do about accommodation if the train lands in at 4am in the morning??

Similarly, if we want to catch a train at 2am in the morning, how safe is it to wander around until then, or what else would you do?

Hi Silverstork,

Safety and security is not a problem unless you try to involve with people at the train stations, now taking the trains in the wee hours or getting off,you need to wether extend your stay at the hotel or ask for early check in.

If these trains arrive or depart from Big stations then no problem to use. In case of small station / remote location then avoid.

Pre Paid Taxi are available at major stations so if your train arrives at 04:00 Am so you can take them and directly go to hotel and get a room according to your choice.

Also if you train is at 02:00 AM so you can leave hotel at around 01:00 Am (According to the distance between hotel and station) and get a cab hired from the hotel itself,

I have exactly the opposite view, I think you should avoid such oddly timed trains like the plague unless you have arranged private pickup and drop in a reliable fashion. The middle of the night is no time to be relying on taxis and autos or driving through a strange city in search of your accommodation. Why do this unless it is completely unavoidable? Also if you arrive at 4 am, your hotel room won't be available so you have to twiddle your thumbs waiting.

I would say, the stations at major metro cities are crowded at all times of the day and night, but for smaller cities, try and avoid if possible.

For such situations (or if you have already reserved your train tickets), try staying in a hotel near the railway station. If it's a big city with a busy station, it's relatively safe.

If your train arrives at 4am, it'd be safer to stay in the Retiring Rooms at the station until dawn instead of venturing out looking for a taxi/pick up.

If your train departs at 2am, you can also also arrive early and stay at the station instead of leaving the hotel late at night.
