Far Northerly 4 week trip advice pls

Hi there

My husband and I are planning our 2nd trip to India. Our first was April last year for a month and we covered Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Udaipur and Ranthambore. We did this by train. We would like to do the rest of Rajasthan at some point (particularly Jodphur, Jalsaimer and Pushkar) however we wish to focus our efforts this year on The far North.

We plan to fly to Delhi and arrive 5th September, we will spend around 3 days in Delhi visiting a few places we didn't get to last time. We would prefer to travel by train, as we were v impressed last time. We were considering the following: Chandigarh, Shimla, manali including Himalayan national park, Dharamasala, Dalhousie and Amritsar. We would like to spend a good 4-5 days in Shimla as this looks a lovely place to relax.

Would you folks think this itinerary is realistic for a month or too ambitious? We would like to get off the beaten track a little more this time so can you recommend any more less tourist filled places? Do you think train travel is the best mode of transport up thee or are we best with a personal driver? (We do have a contact already)

We would prefer to stick to a low-medium budget.

Any advice appreciated, Many thanks, The Harts :-)

Hi Amy,

It is really plenty of time (4 weeks) to visit the mentioned places. You can start with Amritsar after Delhi, then Chandigarh and then further. Seems like a good plan.

Your itinerary looks good to me and you might want to add a few more places on the other side as Corbett national park :), Nainital, Ranikhet, Rishikesh , Haridwar . You might like it more.

I guess a personal driver will make it better for you. As not all the area is well connected with trains and it can drive nut sometimes. You will need flexibility and you will have a lot of that with a driver.

Hope this helps,

Cheers !

Try exploring Jibhi, a virgin village on Manali - Shimla highway, near banjar. It has limited accommodation options but worth staying for a couple of days and also you can head on to Great Himalayan National park from there on Banjar route.

Shimla is a beautiful hill station but very crowded nowadays, i will recommend only 2 or 3 nights in Shimla, though you can spend more days in Manali, as it still has some great locations outside the town. The tour program should look like : Delhi - Shimla - Manali - Dharamshala - Dalhousie - Amrtsar - Chandigarh - Delhi, here most of the sectors will have to be done by road as no train connections, though Delhi-Shimla should be done by train (old British Toy train ) and there is one more from Dharamshala to Pathankot.

Hope the information helps.
