Where would you go in India with three kids?

We have about a month, kids are 9, 7 and 3. They travel fairly well, they love trains, and sleeping on trains. We will be traveling Air Asia and can land/depart in Kochi or Kolkata.

At this point, I'm thinking something like:

Kolkata > Darjeeling > Varanasi > Agra > Jaisalmer > (Mumbai?) > Goa > Kerala (fly out of Kochi)

Other places of interest are Amritsar, Udaipur, Jaipur, Hampi, Mumbai, Delhi and so many more but we just can't do as much as we'd like. We do one day stops fairly well.. while on the road we travel well.. so for example we can get off an overnight train, spend a day somewhere and get on another overnight train.. but then when we do check into a hotel we like to stay three nights at least.

Any words of wisdom?

Travel would be either in April next year (if we can save up in time) or maybe we'll have to wait until October. We don't mind heat, we're Aussies, we just did Cambodia in April and we just make sure to sight see before lunch only and relax in the afternoon.

Hi rachelle

like to give suggestions about kerala part.

*You may board an overnight train from goa to cochin

*spend atleast 7-10 days in kerala

*since you are visiting beaches in goa, skip kerala beaches and opt for backwaters

*you may spend 3 days in hill station-munnar,2 days in a backwater resort in kumarakom,1 day in a houseboat in kumarakom/alapuzha and 2 days in thekkady and 1 day in cochin

*October will be more suitable to visit in kerala than april.kerala will be full of greenery at that time and all waterfalls will be full.climate will be very pleasant.

Your point of landing determines your route. Here is a general thought.

Kolkata - then you do the Northern belt first, moving North or East (the North-East is the most pristine and green part of the country) and then cross West on the tourist trail (cover all your mentioned places of interest), then go down on to west coast, cross-over through central India and then go down the East coast, before getting back to Kochi to fly out. If you land in Kochi, the reverse.

I would suggest a better way: Identify your interests.

Is it Culture and temples? (Orissa/Khajuraho/Hampi/Tamil Nadu), Is it Architecture? (Konark/Rajasthan), Is it religion? (You have the religious circuit) Is it natural reserves (tiger sanctuaries/rainforests in the west india/Wetlands) or is it say ayurveda (Kerala), beach circuit (Goa/Pondicherry), Cities (Mumbai/Delhi/Bangalore), Hill stations (extreme North and Central)? And these are just the general groupings....

Most try to take in too much in too little time, and end up criss-crossing. Key is to accept you cannot do justice to the entire country and there is always another trip. Pick and choose. I have been doing road trips for 10 yrs now, and there are always new places to discover.

And how do you plan on commuting? By road, you may want to book one SUV for your entire trip with a driver (who can double up as a guide) with a well-known tour operator and there are many ( I do that when i cover a given state, gives you far more flexibility but expensive), flights (most convenient, but need to be pre-booked), train (safest, but very rigid and plays havoc with your timelines, bookings are tough). I would recommend the SUV option, unless you want to go budget.

Do keep in mind that there will be a marked difference in quality of accomodation and food through the country, be flexible with your schedule and expectations. Good luck.

Lalith

oh gosh, it's so overwhelming! thank you both for your replies. I guess we would like a bit of everything, and we're definitely going to travel by train, overnight whenever possible.

The kids are too young to remember anything of this trip, barring the 9 year old. Travel for yourself, pick the places you really want to go to, and there will be kid-friendly activities that you can plan in each city, or just downtime, visiting parks and letting them run around and play etc.

Although experts have already given their inputs above, but if your kids like trains (as u ve mentioned) then National Rail Museum is a must visit in New Delhi (if Delhi is still on your itinary)
