I found an email address for the railways but I've had no response to 3 emails. Anyone know of a way of pre-booking directly with the railways and how far in advance you need to do it? Or any good agencies to book through? Thanks!

Visit Bangkok for a few days and when you are there reserve a seat. You can do it in person or pay a travel agency to do it.
Unless you are coming to Thailand around Christmas or New Years holidays you should be able to get a reservation in pretty easy.
Maybe this link will work.

I have used the overnight sleeper several times but I always got the ticket in person.
If you have a hotel near the Skytrain you can take the Skytrain to Asok, at Asok the Subway will take you to the national train station. Of if you are elsewhere without easy access to the Skytrain take a meter taxi and only pay the meter fare.
Good luck.
Hi
I pre-booked because I was travelling over Christmas and New Year.
Try emailing Tatsani at tatsani@travelconnecxion.com. I used her and they were very efficient and helpful.
Alternatively you can head to the station and book your own, especially if your travel dates are flexible.
I caught the sleeper up to Chiang Mai and then back down again. Very impressive I have to say!!
Have fun!!
can someone advise me on which train to get to bangkok to chiang mai? I was planning to stay near the Humphalong station as i thought that was the one i needed BUT HOW DO I GET THERE ANYWAY!!?
Yes, you do need to catch the train out of Hualampong station. It really depends where you are staying in Bangkok, you need to get on the metro which is really easy to use and well signposted.
The metro will take you right to the station itself.
If you want some more info, drop me a line and i'll help you out.
