Harry Nicolaides has just been sentenced to 3 years gaol under Thailand's draconian lese majeste laws.
but it's ok saying "Rufuscat is ridiculous"
it's well known and in most guide books not to insult the royal family, I can't think of any good reason to do it apart from comedy , ok in the UK , but not thailand.
"but it's ok saying "Rufuscat is ridiculous"
can't think of a good reason to say that either ?
Don't mess with thai royalty or religion and you will be fine. Regardless what you think - this isn't going to change.
"I can't think of any good reason to do it apart from comedy"
as you said
Comdey? As there are over 30 lese majeste cases wating before the courts, some from highly esteemed Thai academics, i would regard the "comedy" comment as highly uninformed.
Rufuscat is right about the 30 or so lese majeste case now underway. Giles Ungpakorn an Assistant Professor at one Thailand' top universities has just been charged with lese majeste for a book about the coup he published a long time ago.
One Thai guy has just been arrested for 'surfing the internet'.
Do as the Romans do and Don't criticize any members of the Royal Family. Same you wouldn't criticize Mohammed during your travel in North Pakistan, common sense.
Remember also that also paper money has the kings picture, handle also money with respect!!
i said "I can't think of any good reason to do it apart from comedy" , meaning , if a visitor hadn't done any homework and was unaware of the sensitivity surrounding the thai monarch , they may fall foul of the "law" by cracking a harmless joke. apart from that , i can't think of a reason why anyone would want to.
Ok Andy, you and I have a conversation, maybe by email and you knock Bhumibol. You can be up for lese majeste even if you are in the UK and I am in Laos.
Harry's book was NOT published in Thailand. Afaik not one copy was sold in Thailand. He did not mention the crown price by name, but alluded to him. He was detained in the departure lounge waiting to leave after visiting someone in Thailand. He does not live in Thailand. The author of the "Economist" article of a few weeks ago would undoubtedly be charged ith lese majeste if he/she went to Thailand. In fact a number of posts here would be regarded as lese majeste. Highly intelligent isn't it?
They take it to the max ! what was the article in the economist ? can only find this ?
it mentions not standing for the anthem , i've been at the train station a few times when the anthem is played and noticed not all thais stood or stopped what they were doing ?? do they still play the anthem at hualamphong station?
anyway , have you heard the one about the thai ...................
