Elephants: where is the best place for the experience?

We'll be in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son as well as Bangkok. Where should we do the "elephant' thing? I don't want a circus act, just a real sense of the animals, maybe a chance to interact with them, maybe a ride. What's the best place to experience them in a not super touristy way?

We went to the Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai. This was established as an elephant conservation and rescue centre. You can visit for a full day or as a volunteer and stay for a longer period. There are no elephant rides, but you can feed the elephants and get to go in the river and bathe them. It is a very special experience and far more respectful of these magnificent animals than many of the other tourist traps. Check out their website for more info.

I completely agree... Elephant Nature Park is the best place and if you can do an overnight there even better! However if you MUST ride an elephant pay the extra money and go to Patara Elephant Farm.

Elephant Nature Park is your best option if you care about making a difference.... check out their website and read some of the newsletters and stories of their ellies.. its an amazing place

I have a few different blogs on both places at www.travelblog.org/bloggers/reet if you are interested in comparing them
