Route for two weeks on Dec. for family

We, a family with two kids (4,8) are looking to arrange our vacation in Thailand in Dec. for two weeks. We are not big on spending too long on the beach, unless there are some activities that can be done, we want to see also other place, shrines, markets etc. What would be your reccomendation of route planning?

BTW, not the right forum, but would it make sense to stop on the way to or from for a couple of days in Tokyo?

Stopover in Tokyo will really depend on what airline your are flying with and if it appeals . . .

Don't forget that December is mega peak time and prices can be x3-4times what they are normally, with hotels being booked up early.

Have a good read on sites like this one, pop into a good book store and read a travel guide on the destinations you fancy visiting.

In the various Thailand forums where you want to travel, check out the ‘travel guide’ / ‘inside guides’, ‘things to do’ and ‘……………..hotels’ in the left hand panel of this page, where you look at all sorts of hotels / apartment rental / B&Bs etc and can can sort by budget and read recent reviews,

then on the right check out FAQs / top questions about . . . . . .

Also read JBR / just back reports / trip reports etc or search and read some of the questions already posted in this forum. Lots of really useful information about already posted.

Thailand tourism sites like are also full of useful information http://www.tourismthailand.co.uk/index.php

Or Trip Advisors sister website, Virtual Tourist

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket give a good intro' to Thailand and are easy to travel between with flights / trains / buses.

See what appeals to you, your time schedule and your budgets, as at the moment your question is almost too big to answer.

If the beach isn't important I'd suggest a few days in the capital, followed by a week in Chiang Mai.

You can use CM as a hub to journey around to Mae Hong Song for an overnighter, a short hop down to Lampang or further to Sukhothai, and don't forget Chiang Rai further north for a couple of days.

As TM mentioned the FAQ's are packed full of idea's - checkout the area specific FAQ's on each individual forum, i.e. the Chiang Mai forum;

...the Bangkok forum;

...and this the main Thailand forum.
