Sim Card

My parents are leaving tomorrow to travel through different parts of Thailand and they need to buy a sim card. They will be sending text messages and making calls back to Australia while they are away. What is the best one to use?

FAQS - Sim Cards on the top right will help you.

Best are 1-2-call (AIS), Happy (DTAC), or True Move. Any of those three give good call rates. You can get a free True SIM card at the airport on arrival, or buy for 49 baht in 7-11 stores, TescoLotus Express, phone sales booths and lots of other places.

We have used Happy sim card on a couple of trips and found the call rates to Oz to be very good when compared to using Optus, Vodafone or Telstra. They are easy to use . We started off with 500 baht credit and this lasted a long time.

Dragon - would the Happy sim card cost be the same (TB49) if we get it at the airport instead of 7/11?

Boleslav, the "Happy" sim will be THB 49 wherever you buy it. But be forewarned, the last time I was at the DTAC/Happy center at the airport 3 months ago, the only sim they were offering was the Happy "Simple" sim for THB 99 (but it came with 30 baht of credit). Taking into account the 30 baht credit, the Simple sim only costs an additional 20 baht, and paying the extra THB 20 for the convenience of buying it at the airport and having the customer service rep there to set up your phone for you if you have any problems makes the Happy "Simple" sim a very viable option.
