Flight booked - looking for itinerary advice

Hello all!

Myself and 4 friends (males late 20's) land in Bangkok on December 15th and we fly out of Bangkok on January 10th. We have 27 total days to travel Thailand and maybe one other country.

We plan to stay in Bangkok for a night or two then fly to one of the southern islands or maybe a Malaysian island and work our way back up north to Bangkok.

- Will it be easy to ping pong through the islands? ferry's/flights?

Places we would like to hit are;

1. Phuket (maybe for new years? too had to get accommodations now?

2. Koh Phi Phi

3. A Malaysian Island? too little time or do you think we can squeeze one in? if so which would you recommend?

4. Chang Mai - we would like to see the jungle

5. koh Tao (scuba dive)

6. Bangkok will be our final destination

- any other suggestions? of where else to go or maybe a place to avoid?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Depending on you and your friends interests, you can do that easily.

First, Bangkok shouldn't be missed. there is alot to see and do there and in the immediate surrounding areas. Sightseeing, temples, nightlife, shopping.

You can fly to Phuket from (you didn't indicate your budgets) Bangkok to Phuket easily. Accomodations are plentiful in Phuket especially on Patong Beach. i would make my reservations for Christmas and New years time frames right now prior to arrival. I will give you some good sites to do that on at end of this. Phuket is Thailand. It has a forum page here on TA and there are FAQs listed on right side of every forum page of things to do.

Koh Phi Phi is a small beautiful island in Thailand (not Malasia) next to Phuket and easily accessible from Phuket via boat or ferry. You can do it in a day trip or stay there. Same for Phi Phi as Phuket --book your accomodations in advance for holiday period as its the busiest time of year in the region.

Koh Tao is a smallish island known for scuba and snorkeling in Gulf of Thailand. You can fly to Koh Samui island and take ferry. You could also take a bus from Phuket area (long drive) to coast of gulf to say, Surat Thani and catch ferry to Koh Tao. There are many options for transport to there from Phuket or Bangkok.

Chiangmai is a definite for a visit and also has much more than jungle. Go to its forums page and check it out.

You have plenty of time to see those 4 destinations and alot more. You will need to the time as there's so much to experience.

The sequence you see them in is a bit awkward and really depends on how many days you want to stay in each. So first review the FAQs on each one's forums page to see what interests you. Here's another site for reviewing each location. On the right side of the main page I'm sending you there are links to similar pages for each destination.

www.onestopsamui.com (this site is where you'll find Koh Tao info)

Recommend possibly flying to Chiangmai first, then flying from Chiang mai to Phuket fro New Years period. From Phuket you can visit Phi phi. Then from Chiangmai you can go overland to East coast on Gulf of Thailand or fly to Koh Samui. From either one you can catch ferry to Koh Tao. Then back to Bangkok.

Two suggestions--don't miss spending some time in Bangkok. And since there's 4 or so of you young guys you might (or not) be interested in Pattaya Beach for a few nights if your into nightlife. You won't want to swim there except in pools LOL. Check out the following for info:

For hotels and reservations the following sites have good rates, are safe to use and are popular.

All have reviews, pics, maps, and good rates. Compare them. There are other good sites too like www.asiarooms.com etc.

You will have a great time.

It might be a good plan to go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (train/bus/fly) and from there head South to choose your perfect island? Chiang Mai to Trang by train with an 8 hour pitstop took the best part of 2 days so it could be best to look into flying.

From the South you could then head back to Bangkok to finish.

I've had good recommendations from friends for Koh Lipe, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta. Be aware that sometimes the most popular islands can be spoilt by mass tourism.

We had a good time on Koh Chang 4 years ago but it may be more developed now.

Great island information here - …blogspot.co.uk/

definitely go north first to chiang mai and then head south. how you travel all depends on budget and taste. You might all enjoy one overnight train (with beds!) up to chiang mai- leaves in the evening and gets into CM about 10am I paid around 800B last feb for this and it was good fun. first class a little more; these compartments have 2 bunks, 2nd class has 4 bunks per compartment.

loads to do in chiang mai, see that forum. zip lining, white water, elephants and so much more very cheaply done.

get a direct flight from CM to phuket or samui and vist a beach or 2 in the south, and then finish with a few more nights in bangkok.

Once budget is known, hotels can be suggested.

We were in Thailand for 2.5 weeks. We flew into Bangkok and then flew up to Chiang Mai for 3 days. Chiang Mai is really known for their temples and elephant camps. I wish we had gone to Chiang Mai last because they also have a ton of markets and we did most of their shopping there. Being that you are four guys, not sure how much shopping you will do!

Would definitely fly to CM (not too expensive to fly). From there we flew into Phuket and drove up to Khao Lak. From Khao Lak you can take a boat over to the Similian Islands. Great for snorkeling! From there we went to Krabi (took a car and was a 2 hour drive). Its near Phuket. The reason why we chose Krabi was that we could take day trips to Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, etc. From there we flew to Koh Kood (north of Koh Samui). We were going to fly to Koh Samui but it was Monsoon season (November) so opted not to stay there. Since you are going in December you may hit some rain so just be aware of that. Since you are there for such a long time, you may also want to jump over to Cambodia or Vietnam as well or travel further south to Malaysia if you are still wanting island life. Thailand is beautiful! I'm jealous that you get to visit for so long!!
