Great Beach Destinations in Thailand

My wife and I are starting to plan our trip to Thailand for the summer of 2014 (I know that is the rainy season but seeing as we are both teachers, that is the only time we can go). We will do some time in Bangkok and then we want to go to a beach destination. Originally we said Phuket, but with reading negative after negative story about that area, we would feel more comfortable going somewhere else.

So I wanted to ask all of you experts on areas (cities or specific hotels) that you would recommend. I have read Samui and Krabi are pretty nice and romantic, and that Samet and Ko Chang are a little better for families.

Some additional info:

-I like scuba diving and would like to do a day or two of diving.

-My wife is a beach vacation sort of girl, so a nice pool area or strip of beach is important because that is where she will spend a lot of time.

-It would be nice to have some areas to go sightsee: temples, market, any other cool culture experiences.

-We have not decided about whether we are going to use hotel points or just pay out of pocket. I have had many people say that Thailand has some of the cheapest hotel rates in the world. We also do not have any status at any hotel chain.

-Although we would love to stay at 5 star hotels, we are realistic. I do know you get what you pay for, but I don't want to go overboard. If we do pay out of packet, I am fine paying up to $200-250 a night (although I would much rather pay less than that). If we pay with points, We do not need to stay at the highest category hotels. I would rather get another night or two and stay at a medium category.

Thanks in advance for you help.

1. It's only rainy season on the west coast of Thailand, but the weather is generally very good on the east coast.

2. I would suggest Koh Tao for diving at that time of year.

3. Koh Samui might suit your wife.

4. You should think about spending time in Bangkok and Chiang Mai for temples, markets and cultural experiences.

5. Plenty of accommodation options ranging from budget to luxury.

6. You will find plenty of places for less than $200.

You need to decide which areas to stay first and then find out about accommodation options on the various, specific forums.

Based simply on the time of year you are going (and keep in mind I am no Thailand expert but am planning my next trip there at the moment) I would say look at Koh Samui which has a slightly different rainy season from Phuket. I am not sure the exact dates you are considering, but we were there in May (mid season) and the early evening rains did not put a damper on our holiday.

Wet season in Koh Samui is about mid October to Mid December.

As for scuba - Koh Tao (a short boat ride away) is well known for great diving, we only snorkel but very much enjoyed the sights and visibility in May.

Lots of great beaches although the 'best' depends on your personal criteria. I like Bophut for dining but the sand on Chaweng is better for example.

There are a few temples around - we did a full day tour and found it enjoyable, (I have done reviews on a few of them) although the variety is nothing like Chiang Mai they are certainly beautiful. If you do just one go for Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem.

We spent about $230.00 AUD per night for a lovely resort, your budget is very feasible for mid-season I would imagine but prices might creep up with the Northern summer.

Koh Samui still can visit until mid October. There are many nice places that you can go like Koh Tao (good for diving/snorkeling), Koh Phangan,Moon Koh Ang Thong or Koh Sok National park in Surat Thani, About Hotel you maybe can check at this one www.citinurbanasamui.com , there is new a Hotel open at Chaweng in Bophut is good location to stay, I just see it's look nice uphill.

or else you also can visit PraChuapKhiRiKhan province , There is nice place name Koh Talu that you both can do diving or snorkeling, PraChuap have many beautiful places to visit like BangBurd beach, Saiku WaterFall, Hua Hin etc. PraChuapKhiRiKhan nearby ChomPorn province (Koh Tao)

You don't say how long you'll be in thailand but if you can manage it I would add Chiang Mai after Bangkok then go on to the Gulf coast for the rest of your holiday, check out Poppies in Chaweng South in Samui, it's under your budget and on the best stretch of beach and for diving as the others have said Koh Tao is your best option.
