Train from bangkok airport to Nong Khai

Hello,

We are flying from Singapore to Bangkok at the beginning of April and are hoping to travel by train to Nong Khai the same evening, returning to spend time in Bangkok after our trip to Laos. As the train to Nong Khai stops at Don Muang airport we would like to board the train there rather than going into bangkok. I am looking to per book tickets but can't find an option to pick up tickets at the airport station. Does anyone have advice as to how to do this? Are we likely to be able to buy tickets on the day or will we need to travel into bangkok and set off from the main station?

Thanks for any help and also for all of the information on this forum which has helped me in planning the trip,

Lynne

Just buy your tickets at Don Muang statiion. It's unlikely to be booked out.

Maninseat61.com

I love sleeper trains in thailand.

Thanks,

I've used the Man in Seat 61 site and his advice is that we should be able to buy tickets at the airport station, so will probably do that. Just a tiny bit nervous that train will be full, although if that does happen we'll just change plans and spend time in Bangkok at the beginning of the trip.

Thanks both

Lynne

Just curious how early in April? Keep in mind the Thai New Year holiday running from 13-15 April and many workers in Bangkok live in the Isaan region. Trains and buses can get busy around this time period.

We arrive in Bangkok on 1st April and leave on 12th so hopefully should be ok. We haven't booked anything in Laos so can be flexible and we're hoping to spend a few days in Bangkok at the end of our trip so if we can't catch train on the 1st we could stay in Bangkok at the beginnIng rather than end. Getting very close now and we are very excited.

Hello,

Yes, we did. Sorry for not posting about our trip earlier. We arrived at Don Muang at 4ish and eventually found a small ticket office at the station. It wasn't easy to find as it was down steps from the overpass to the airport hotel. Perhaps we made it more complicated than it was, we couldn't see the station below so ignored the sign through a side door. The ticket seller must have assumed that we wanted the cheapest possible tickets and apologised for the fact that there were only first class sleeper seats left or one second class. We bought the 1st class two berth cabin tickets to Nong Khai and reserved 2nd class tickets for our return journey. It was all good. The train was about an hour late leaving and we went immediately to the dining car. Great fun, very cheap, sociable. Good night's sleep and simple enough to get to Vientiane by tuk tuk to bridge, bus across bridge and shared tuk tuk to Vientiane. Seems so long ago now that I'm back at work, returning home in the evening to miserable weather. Part of a magical trip....

@dlynne<<<bus across bridge and shared tuk tuk to Vientiane.>>>

That's a great way to get first impressions of Laos.

Shame you never loitered for a few nights in Nong Khai. Lovely laid back frontier town, with plenty to see and do.
