SIM cards

Mar 17, 2013, 3:40 AM

I am coming to Thailand for 6 days- 4 in Koh samui and 2 in Bagkok

Can a foreigner buy a SIM card for mobile phones, for use there

Any idea how much it would cost for a week for the SIM and what typically would be the cost per local, long distance and overseas calls?

Many thanks

Yes, a non-Thai, non-resident *can* buy and use a pre-paid SIM card for service here. Largely only the POST-paid services require formal documentation and other paperwork as a post-paid service has an element of "credit" to it.

As to cost.. All three of the major carriers; that's AIS, dtac or True, all offer several PRE-paid packages that last as long as one month, to as short as one day in duration.

Its hard to quote you a price as the a actual package has a huge impact on its price.. Some have more air-time and Internet access included in it, others have less.

Just as one measurement, at present, AIS' most expensive, one month (non Blackberry) pre-paid plan is B899

As to phone call costs.... Your calling rates will be goverened by your plan, but generally speaking LOCAL calling can be as cheap as B1 per minute.... Internationl rates vary widely based on the country you're calling, however with all three carriers, there are special calling numbers you can use to access discounted international long distance services.

Prices to places like the US, and parts of Europe can be as low as B3 or so... But again, the country you're calling very much impacts this.

prepaid simcard for Domestic available in every 7-11 shops.

International calling card as well.

But in case you need the international Sim, find it in AIS SHOP, DTAC SHOP and TRUE SHOP in any department store.
