I am currently looking into an itinerary for a trip to Thailand in November / December. As part of the trip I would like to do some trekking, and consider 2 options fo that
Option 1: Chiang Mai
I went to CM for 1 1/2 days on my way to Laos last year, and really enjoyed it there. As the trekking is apparently very good there this could be an obvious choice for 8 - 10 days to see CM, Chiang Rai and go trekking for 3 days, including a stay at a hill trip village. I have seen the temples in Chiang Mai already - but obviously there is still so much to see for me.
Option 2: Umphang
I read a bit about Umphang and it sounds like an interesting place to visit. On ym way I would stop at Sukhothai for a couple pf days to explore the ruins, before heading to Mae Sot to get to Umpang, where I would like to stay 4 or 5 days. This sould give me a chance to Trek for 3 days to see the Tee Lor Su waterfall, staying in a hill tribe village and just experience Umphang a bit.
I am aware that it is much easier to get to Chiang Mia via train, and that travelling to Umphang would take a bit longer (would fly back from Mae Sot to Bangkok). I am currnetly stuck - as both places sound amazing and I am not sure which place I would prefer.
It would be therefore much appreciate if anyone could provide some thoughts or comments about these two places, as it might help me.
