Thailand in October- islands?!

Me and my boyfriend are going to Thailand from 9th-23rd October 2013. We are flying to Bangkok and then plan to travel around for the two weeks. Are the Islands a complete write-off for this time of the year with it being rainy season. Or have people had good experiences?

My boyfriend wants to do some diving and is looking at Koh Tao for this?

Any advice will be appreciated as its our first time there. Would also be good to know of some good places to go see/ things to do.

In mid-October, the weather on the Andaman (west) coast tends to start to calm down and dry up, while the southeast coast is heading toward the peak of its rainy season. So I would suggest you head for the west coast and leave Koh Tao for another year. Koh Kradan off Trang has wonderful snorkeling. I would imagine the diving is also OK. Serious divers tend to head for the Similan Islands, but unfortunately the park is closed until 15 November. http://wikitravel.org/en/Similan_Islands
