cellphones in Thailand

We are traveling for three weeks and need to stay connected back home for work. Verizon does not offer a plan...what they do have will get expensive very quickly. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Hi,

If you phone is unlocked there are plenty of cheap sim deals you can used when you arrive. You can even get set up at the airport. If you still want your own phone and sim then places like MBK sell very cheap basic phones and sims for cheap calls.

Have a look at the "FAQ SIM cards, iPhones etc" over on the right for some ideas.

Cheers

Verizon operates a CDMA network which is not compatible with the GSM/WCDMA system used in Thailand. If you need to maintain phone connectivity, you have to buy a compatible unlocked phone either in the USA or once you arrive in Thailand.

I recall another thread where the TA phone guru Hollywood recommended buying a used phone in the USA. You probably cannot afford to waste time not being connected for work while you shop for a phone in Thailand. If you have the phone when you arrive, you can get a SIM card from the mobile operator shops at the airport and they will help you to set the phone up to use mobile data, etc.

Free Wi-Fi is pretty widespread in hotels and bars.

One caveat to the Goodsoil Family post- if you have a verizon iphone 5, 5s or 5c, it will work in Thailand. The verizon iphone 5 or later is an unlocked world phone, meaning it will take any sim from anywhere in the world.

There's no need to waste much time if you need to buy a handset locally. There are phone shops in every mall and many Skytrain stations which all sell a no-frills phone for about 800 to 1000 baht. Most likely much cheaper and simpler than getting one in the States in advance.
