Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok by train

Hi, I want to base a 3 week trip from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok by train in March. Any suggestions on where to visit? Was thinking maybe Penang, Langkawi, but so many Thai islands to choose from?!

Age 33, travelling with my wife, we like beaches / boat trips / adventure / good food and some creature comforts!

Many thanks

Hmm - lots of possibilities.

Consider getting off your train for Penang & Langkawi. After your time there, you could get ferry to Thai west coast and do some islands on that side.

Once you've had your fill of that, make your way back to the east side to rejoin the train line at Surat thani for your trip north.

Can still break off on the way north at Chumphon, Prachuap Or Hua Hin.

You could also stop off at Surat Thani (Phun Phin) for more convenient access to the islands of Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao as the train is not so convenient on the west coast and usually requires a bus ride to get anywhere near the islands and main areas.

You can also get to Trang by rail - though connections to Trang from northbound trains may be less than ideal. Maybe a road connection to Trang (e.g. from Hat Yai) could be useful for getting in, while either of the two daily trains to/from Trang could help you to contine northward?

Trang (airport and rail station) are used by some as jumping off places for road (and boat to islands) connections to Trang and Krabi provinces, as well as farther afield. Trang has a reputation as a nice place in its own right - for its botanic garden, unique food offerings, etc.
