1 Week in Thailand

I will be traveling to Thailand in March and will be there for 9 days. I would like to spend 2-3 days in Bangkok and then head out to the beaches. I want thinking I would spend 1 week in one resort (to avoid moving every 2-3 days) and simply taking day trip to other islands/areas.

Can anyone recommend a hotel in Bangkok - close to the shops, restaurants, bars, etc. and a good island to stay at, that is close enough to do a few day trips to other islands?

Thanks!

You'll have to give us a budget before we can recommend accommodation to you. Two areas that come to mind with your criteria are either Ao Nang in Krabi which is a really good base for visiting other islands, has plenty of shops and restaurants, bars etc. Otherwise on the east coast probably South Chaweng in Samui which would be a bit busier than Ao Nang and is a good area for visiting the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.
