Overnight boat island hopping

I am keen on the idea of island hopping in the south of Thailand but with overnight stays on a boat, preferably in a small group, anyone done this? Do you recommend it? Which companies?

Or is it easier and cheaper to ferry between them and stay on the islands? We are there for 2 weeks at the start of April

Most of the islands on the east or west coasts are near enough to each other to do day ferries. On the east coast you have Samui, Phangan and Tao and the longest journey would be about 1 1/2 hours from Samui to Tao. On the west coast you can travel right from Phuket down towards Langkawi in Malaysia, again all would be day ferries. You can overnight in the Similan Islands and probably some of the islands further south. In April you can have your pick of either east or west coast as the weather is usually hot and dry and both sides.
