Revolut Travel Card
Save

Hi,

I have seen some older posts regarding "Revolut's" travel card and I was hoping someone would have a recent update as to how good it is?

Link: https://revolut.com/

"The RevolutCard™ works like your normal debit card but with zero charges and no hidden fees.

When you spend or use an ATM the card automatically converts your money into local currencies at perfect interbank rates"

So my question: Do all ATM's in Thailand charge a fee? Has anyone had success abroad with this card?

I got my friend to sign up and added funds in and received a free £10 in my account which I successful withdrew back into my account (3 working days) so it definitely works - just unsure if it will work abroad and if people recognize it.

As far as I know all ATMs in Thailand now charge a 180 Baht fee but I can live with that it is the charges from my own bank that are the killer (6.5% total) so I will be following this thread with interest as I am thinking of getting a Revolut card myself.

Hi Michael,

I had a chat with Revolut today and they do not charge for ATM withdrawal fees, exchanges or transfers and they dispense money at interbank exchange rates which is a big plus for me and pretty damn good in general.

I read after writing my post that there is a Citibank in Bangkok that doesnt charge an ATM fee and also AEON in Phuket, however, the fee isnt too big of an issue if I am taking out bulk at a time. Plus, if the Revolut card can be used as a debit card you can use it as and when in resturants and keep on top of the funds left on the app that comes with it (which, by the way, is a REALLY good / nice app!)

I will be in Thailand this time next month so if you like, I could report back or PM you directly and let you know how I got on?

The only catch... I read on their website that they "Guarantee no charges for the first 12 months" - so i wonder if there will be a membership fee after... we will wait and see!

If Revolut charges no fees, gives you interbank rates, how do they make money? How do they offset Visa/MasterCards network fees? No offense intended, but they are lying about something. Banks don't give something for nothing, they want their profit same as other business.

AEON charges 150 baht for ATM withdrawals, they are no longer free.

Hi Gary when are you going / coming back if you could let me know how you got on it would be greatly appreciated I am going on the 20th of Dec and like you I read the 12 month thing so I will leave it as close as possible to that date to get the max out of it, although they do say on the website that they don't foresee any significant fees after 12 months.

MrCycling - Of course I appreciate your concerns about how "free" this is, however, after some digging i found a snippet of information to clear this up:

"For now, everything is free — opening an account, transferring money and paying with Revolut’s card are all free. Revolut makes money from MasterCard’s cut on every transaction — it’s transparent for the user. Making everything free is a strategy to boost the company’s growth — the startup also says that it might add fees in 12 months"

Michael, I am flying out on the 2nd November for 14 nights so I can update you before you travel. Another nice bit of info:

"This card supports 23 different currencies, meaning that even if you only hold GBP on your Revolut account, you can pay in Thai Bhat when you travel to Thailand and avoid exchange fee"

I think that Mastercard charges a small fee to merchants using cards to take payment

so they make profit everytime you make a transaction in a shop, but its free for you to use which is a bonus

@Garry87-

I'd also like to hear about your experience with the card in Thailand as I'm thinking of using it when I fly out in December. If you can give us all an update upon your return that'd be great! :)

Cheers!

I have been reading every review I can find on this card (not that many because it is new) and have found nothing negative (other than a few minor glitches) posted about it China, Japan, USA, Spain and France are some of the countries mentioned where it has been used trouble free.

@Datherden21 - Of course! As soon as I get back, or even while I am still away during November I will post up how I found the card!

@michael C - Thank you for that! Sounds like we could be onto a winner then if it all checks out OK. Only a week to go and I can start putting it to the test :)
