Without any doubt, Phuket is the number one island destination in Thailand. Don't be put off by those who say it is too commercialised. There are 17 beach resort areas on the island and you can find whatever you want. For a quiet, relaxing time, I would recommend Naithon Beach or Nai Harn beach - both fabulous beaches, but far away from the nightlife and shopping. You can also try Karon Beach - the beach is so large it is never crowded. Hotels are good value here. Phuket Island has a huge range of resorts - from budget guesthouses in Patong Beach (the busiest beach and nightlife centre) to the lovely five-star resorts at Laguna and Kata Beach. If you really don't want to go to Phuket or can't find accommodation, I would opt for Krabi. It is not an island, but there are plenty of islands to visit. Krabi is relaxed and undeveloped. Of the other places you mentioned, Hua Hin is also on the mainland and is over-rated, best for weekend breaks from Bangkok. Pattaya is great value, but fully commercialised, while Koh Samet and Koh Chang don't come close to the resorts in the south. Phuket is amazing!

Koh Chang has some great beaches and the weather is guaranteed sunshine at xmas. Klong Phrao Resort on Klong Phrao beach is really nice with a lagoon surrounding the rooms,

a restaurant on an "island' in the lagoon and all the creature comforts. yes, phuket has more stunning scenery as the poster above said but it is quite a bit more expensive.

If you want quiet beach isalnd try Koh Chang, you can fly to the mainland airport at Trat in 40 minutes or you can take the express bus down the coast to Trat, it is then a short boat ride across to Koh Chang. Hua Hin is not an island but a coastal area with beaches, just over 2 hours by taxi, or you can take the train or fly in 35 minutes, taxi is the easiest.

Do you just want beach and relaxation or are you looking for Elephants/treks/parks etc ?

Just realised we don't know what time of year?

This is important weatherwise and what might be a nice place one time of year not good another time, some islands though that spring to mind could be Koh Chang at perhaps the Panviman resort or the Pimalai Resort on Koh Lanta but it really depends what time of year, which month were you thinking of?

Take a look at the Pimalai or Sri Lanta on Koh Lanta island, quiet and relaxing and 'some' restaurants, if you want easier to get to, nice top class resort try the Nakamanda in Krabi area, not far from town, very serence and relaxing.

If you want to stay on the most amazing beach, stay at the Tubkaak Hotel in Krabi, quite expensive but fantastic, we stayed over Xmas and New Year and the weather was beautiful every day.

both are so expensive - they look stunning! can you recommend another website which have reasonable rates?

would you say koh samui is too busy?
