thoughts on nice but cheap place near Grand Palace, etc.?

Our trip itinerary involves landing at bangkok at 9pm at night. Then the next day in the afternoon we are off to Phuket, Malaysia and Cambodia for a week, before returning to Bangkok for 2/3 days+nights before we leave for the US again.

We want to get off the plane and stay somewhere very close to the Grand Palace, Reclining Buddah and Emerald buddah temples as I've heard they are all extremely close to each other....

We know we'll be tired but we'd rather "get up and go" that first morning at 8 or 9am and see the big things, and then crash from time change on the beaches of Phuket, then waste our first 1/2 day in Bangkok being at a hotel near the airport since we won't leave til 1:30-2:30pm for Phuket anyway due to check in time.

I know a lot of people say you can really basically stay "anywhere" in the area, which is fine, but I was wondering if anyone had any SPECIFIC places they would recommend from personal experience where they have stayed? Again, looking for a place just for that night, nice, but cheap, and near those temples...I can do the research for our 2/3 night stay at the end just using TA reviews, but I figured our 1st night situation is a little unique and I would turn to all of my fellow TAers for advice :)

thanks to anyone who took the time to read this and/or respond!

I should add too, that any recommendations for somewhere authentic and relatively cheap on the river (ie, NOT chain Hilton, Peninsula etc...) for our 2/3 night stay at the end would be really recommended?

Does any place even exist like that on the river? I looked at all the hotel reviews, but hard to tell what is on the water and what is located far away...

Sorry this has turned into a 2 part question

How much is "cheap" to you? My cheap and your cheap could be pretty far apart!

Check out Arun Residence (www.arunresidence.com). I've never stayed there but I did look at the rooms and I've eaten there. It's a very small, very cute place near Wat Pho right on the river. I think their rates are normally higher than you want to pay but if you contact them directly, you may be able to get a lower rate.

I always stay at New Siam Guesthouse no 2 which is a 2 min walk from the river.. but you could also try New Siam Riverside.. its their newer property right on the river.. the restaurant and pool overlook the river...
