Transport from Khao San Road

Staying in the Ibis Riverside (near Krung Thon Buri sky train) and want to find th easiet way back to our hotel after an evening on Khao San Road. We'll get the express boat there but it will not be running by the time we plan to come back

Is the best option a taxi? How much is this likely to cost?

Hi,

Given the hour, a taxi would probably be the best option.. If it's not past midnight you *could* still use the BTS to get you to Ratchathewi BTS, which would you closer to KSR... but what would be nett more costly to you as you'd have to pay the BTS fare x2 (you say "we" so I interpret this as 2 or more people) then taxi fare from Ratchathewi ito your hotel... and it would also be longer in total travel time,,,

So, take a taxi.. rough cost? Maybe B70 to B80 or so.. he'll probably stay on the west side of the river, following the river on the main street-- and cross to the east side at either the Pinklao or Rama VIII bridges to get to KSR.

Yes GOPBI is correct

I stay in the Wongwein Yai area and like to go up to Khao Sans Rd from time to time to sample the restaurants & atmosphere. Taxi is 60-65B so it should be 70B ish to Krung Thonburi. We get a taxi back around mid night, there's plenty and the fare does not go up.

Agreed. Because of the tourist concentration, KSR can be a bit problematic when it comes to taxis. Always flag a passing taxi, not one sitting around, waiting for a victim. It might also help to walk a short ways away from the festivities.

Thanks for the info - taxi seems like the best option. Should we set the price before getting in or just use the meter?

Hi,

NEVER, EVER agree to or engage in ANY conversation regarding a fixed price! ever!

Wyy?

1) it's illegal by city code.. all trips that start and end withing the city limits MUST be done by meter rates.., you cannot ask for off-meter, the driver cannot ask for or charge off-meter..

2) When/if you do agree on a off-meter price, it is in 99% of the cases a HIGHER price than what the meter would be.. If you think about it, since the meter rate is guaranteed to the driver, why would s/he ever negotiate for and/or accept a rate that would be LESS than meter rate?

3) If the driver offers or accepts, it's a "red flag" to a potential driver who doesn't play by the rules..Things that might or could happen is that once you go there there the 'agreed' price has now magically changed.. etc..

Bottom line.. do not ever negotiate.. it's illegal and for you, will almost always equal to a nett higher rate.. Insist on the meter.. if s/he won't.. move on to another taxi..

I agree with GOPBI. Tell the driver where you're going BEFORE you get in. If he nods yes, get in, he starts the meter (at 35 baht) and off you go.

If he even attempts to negotiate a fare, wave him off and get another taxi. There are thousands of taxis available at all hours of the day and night.
