Acid attack in Bangkok, warning to travellers.

I just got a text message from a friend who is holidaying in Bangkok. Yesterday while out in the streets she had a thai man come up behind her and squirt acid onto the back of her neck. Her husband saw who did it and managed to thump him before he took off running. She was wearing a silver necklace which just about disinigrated the chain. ( Saw a pic of it) My friend had to recieve medical treatment for her burns. This is a disgusting and cowardly attack and I hope they find who is responsible for this before they do it to some other unsuspecting tourists.

Although it hasn't received too much press, these attacks have been occurring. The do, however, seen to be quite few and isolated.

I guess all anyone can do is to keep aware of their surroundings. Try to notice anyone paying particular attention to, or following you.

There were reports of an attack at Asoke BTS 2 weeks ago where both a man and woman were sprayed on the neck and scalp...If this latest attack is genuine then very alarming news indeed !!!

Are these attacks focused in certain areas? Any specific times of day? Do the targets have anything in common?

From what OP said, that didn't sound like random nutters, but a planned and premeditated attempt at robbery. Somewhat disturbing, but I hope rare. The message appears to be cover up your jewelry/necklaces.

"The message appears to be cover up your jewelry/necklaces."

I've stopped wearing jewellery when I travel - one less thing to worry about.

It would be interesting to know if these incidents were reported to the police and, if so, what was their attitude.
