National mourning 8-10 april, what will be open?

hi all (especially bangkok experts)

with respect to the various posts on this forum regarding the national mourning from 8-10 april, would like to ask what important sites in and around bangkok should be open or closed during that period.

unfortunately all my bookings clash with those dates. had planned to visit the grand palace and nearby wats on 9 or 10 april. :-( and also the siam niramit show.

all help appreciated.

thanks

ash

The Grand Palace is definitely closed, but I doubt if anything else will be. Anywhere near that area will attract huge crowds so be prepared for that.

Its actually a Royal Funeral, not a mourning period.

Yes. Its is normally open 365 days a year, but as this is a State Funeral its closed for that - its right opposite the very elaborate Royal Funeral Pyre in Sanam Luang. Even if you can't visit the Grand Palace, try to see the funeral, its an amazing and rare sight.

Here's the official schedule:

Remember to wear appropriate clothing for a funeral, and to show respect. It will be very crowded and hot, and you will have to go early to get a vantage point.

8-10 April are the dates suggested by the government - "Night entertainment venues will be asked to suspend their businesses from April 8-10 during the funeral of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana," - that does not mean every pub or bar will close. What is does mean is not 100% clear. There is no requirement for restaurants to close although some may close on the actual funeral day.

Bears repeating...

"Remember to wear appropriate clothing for a funeral, and to show respect."

Nothing is taken more seriously than the monarchy.

For a casual foreigner, buried in the crowd, modest dress would be appropriate. If you happen to get close to any of it, you won't want to be wearing board shorts, tank tops and stupid baseball caps. In fact, hats should be removed.

Photographs of the royal family are prohibited, although some will sneak a shot or two. You aren't allowed to gain a high vantage point, above any of the royals. If you climb something to catch a glimpse, you might be told to get down.

For some reason, we often bump into the royal family. We've encountered them no less than a half dozen times since moving here. I've watched many an ill prepared foreigner escorted out of the path.

These were simply chance encounters at "everyday" happenings. This funeral will be a solemn event.

Personally, I will leave this occasion to the Thai People.
