Bangkok Metro / Underground - Security Alert

Currently there is a security alert on the public transportation in Bangkok. This is especially so on the Underground / Metro system (MTS?) where everyone n the way in has to pass through a metal detector arch. My small back pack always sets off the alarm due to my camera inside. My pack then has to be searched. So how does this affect those with suitcase / backpack luggage heading to / from the airport?

The MRT doesn't go to the airport.

Haven't heard of any alerts lately.

No security alerts at this time. It would be on the news if there were any. The Metro have been checking bags for at least two years. It won't affect your trip to the airport.

You won't be the first to take a suitcase on the MRT, they'll cope and so will you.

Your heading is thoughtless and barely relevant to your actual question.

Agree with Fourb2. Nothing new there. The metal detectors have been in operation for years. You'll find them in the major malls too such as MBK and Siam Paragon. It's the way of the world we live in today. get over it.

What you experienced is the norm in Bangkok. You may be asked to open your suitcase on the way to the airport.

The "security alert" you experience has been in place for years. Its the MO for the MRT, all bags get check...period.

I went thru the same MRT everyday, saw the same staff everyday, saw the same security everyday but each time my murse set off the detector, it got searched.

Thank you for *your* courteous reply - unlike most of the others. We will be staying in the outer suburbs of Bangkok and will be travelling late in the evening from our hotel to the airport via the MRT and then Skytrain for the BA flight to London at 00.20. We are newbies in Thailand and have met with nothing but pleasantness and generosity from the Thai people themselves. Our question about the security at MRT stations was genuine. We did not expect abusive responses to our innocent question here. But then many of the ex-pats we have come across in Chiang Mai and Bangkok etc. have seemed to have had a chip on their shoulders so some of the responses here were par for the course. Perhaps some people here need to learn some respect and courtesy that the Thais themselves have in abundance.

"Currently there is a security alert on the public transportation in Bangkok" - unfortunately this statement is untrue. Nothing has changed in a long time. Perhaps a statement that was factual would have been met with better responses.
