Bangkok first, then???

Hi all - I know this question has been asked before but after searching I cant find the answers - so please forgive me in advance for asking again! We're planning our 5th trip to Thailand and want somewhere new to try. We'll start our visit in Bangkok and then probably an island or beach, but dont know where. We did like Kata Beach in Phuket as its great for families, plenty of cafes to choose from, and close to good shopping in Patong. Where do you suggest we visit next?

Where have you already visited so we don't suggest some place you've been to before.

Yes time of year is important.

If between mid January and September Koh Samui might suit you, and you can mix with other nearby islands and / or coastal areas to get a good mix of places.

Just a thought, if you are flying into and then out of Bangkok if you are going to do a lot of shopping in Bangkok perhaps have a few days at the end so you don't have to take all your shopping around with you :)

There are lots of great beaches, islands and also inland areas with a huge amount of things to see and do

Hi again, Probably October next year and we've been too Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai..... We do like Phuket - but it is a but to touristy for us - we do like to have things to do - like visiting nice temples and teen daughter does "need" markets to explore... It doesnt have to be a beach area ( we absolutely love Chiang Mai) and we dont mind monsoon season - we've been every year in sept-oct and been very lucky with the weather....

We'll probably start in Bangkok for 3-4 nights then a week elsewhere and probably back to Bangkok fro another 3-4 nights.

Hi

What about Hua Hin, we went there last October and the weather was perfect. Not many Aussies there, good Night Market with great food, beaches not that good, especially when you come from the Gold Coast. Good price hotels in October, nice restraurants and bars around.

Visit Koh Kood in Trat or Koh Samet for the beach.

Visit Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima for wildlife.

Visit Khao Sok in Surat Thani for beautiful places and good activities. (Recommend)

Thankyou everyone - we'll start looking at the areas you've all recommended - Khao Sok sounds interesting - we dont need beach as Chrissy mentions we have those at home... ALthough there is something about holidaying on an island

I'd second Hua Hin, particularly if you love markets, great restaurants and a genuine Thai resort. And, only 2.5 hours by car from Bangkok.
