Best Local Food Market

We are very into food and would like to visit a market where the locals go to buy their food. Can anybody please suggest the best one?

Thank you

There are markets everywhere.

What area are you staying in?

Yes, wet markets are common as there isn't really a 'best' one. If you want something just a tad more 'local', hop on the Chao Phraya express boat and travel upriver to Nonthaburi. A 5 minute walk from the pier brings you to a big provincial market in a maze of alleyways selling just about everything. The ride is about 45-60 minutes each way at a fare of roughly 20 baht each.

Many Thais buy food from street stalls rather than cooking.

For us we do like Wang Lang (Siriraj) can take boat from Chaophraya to get there.

Yes great suggestion. When you get off the express boat at Siriraj, its on the left opposite the hospital buildings. Another fascinating maze of alleyways.

When we need to buy a fruit gift or similar for someone we go to Or Tor Kor market which is near Chatuchak market. They have some excellent stuff there.

I live near Aw Taw Kaw and visit often for my bamee fix from stall 12/5. But, I really wouldn't put in the same class as the others mentioned.

That said, it is a comfortable choice for the uninitiated. Many will be more likely to dine from there than from many other markets.

If you do visit Nonthaburi, try some soup from this young lady: http://tinyurl.com/cd9npdu She is a very short distance in from the front of the market.

We have seen the Khlong Toey market. This is a big big market!

We have been there whilst making our shopping for "Cooking with Poo" - the cooking school.... maybe an idea for you?

One more suggestion: try to find Tha Thian market. it is close to Wat Pho. If you stand at the Tha Thien river boat pier, the market is right behind the shops selling all kinds of dried fish just infront of the pier. Just try to find the tiny alley, that leads you into the hidden market. Take a camera!
