Best area to stay in Bangkok for a group of friends

Just looking for a bit of advice on which area of Bangkok to stay in. I'm travelling with a group of friends, we're in out mid twenties. Only going to be in Bangkok for two nights. Looking for somewhere that's close to the good nightlife, not too touristy or businessy. Would Silom being a good idea?

Silom is part of the Central Business District and also home to the very touristy Patpong night market, so it might disappoint both ways.

Maybe Thonglor http://www.thonglor-ekamai.com/ would be suitable, since it has quite a bit of nightlife that has mostly targeted Thais. A hotel in the area will also be an easy taxi ride away from the very Thai Royal City Avenue (RCA) entertainment street. On the other hand, the Thong Lo BTS rail station provides good connectivity to traditional tourist night spots on lower Sukhumvit Road etc. if the Thonglor nightlife disappoints

I would stay near the intersection of Sukhumvit and Asoke. While this area is touristy, both the MRT (underground) and BTS (skytrain) have stops here (making transportation very easy). There is a lot of "western" nightlife within walking distance (including Sukhumvit Soi 11). The Thonglor/Ekamai area and RCA (both nightlife areas catering more to locals) are also very close and easily accessible.

For a group in their 20's, I think this area would be much better than Silom. And there are hundreds of hotels in every price range to choose from.

Thanks for the suggestions. Glad I asked before we booked anything. Sukhumvit appears to be the winner.

Silom would be a good choice, but Sukhumvit would be even better.

Another vote for Sukhimvit, we stay at the Adelphi suites and enjoy staying there but we also like the Riverside area.
