Where to stay in bangkok?

We are a group of friends travelling to Bangkok in December/January and I was just wondering what is a nice area to stay at in terms of nice food, night life ,bars, SHOPPING, site-seeing etc. (The real Bangkok experience). We are all around 22 so we are looking for a fun time but not too expensive. Also please recommend nice hotels in these areas ($40-$70 per room, around 1500THB). Thanks!!

A lot of 22 year olds would head to the Khao San Road area, which is backpacker central and is also close to the main sightseeing areas such as Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun etc. However, if you want to be close to more upmarket bars and closer to shopping areas then many tourists like the Sukhumvit area. Choose an area first and then ask questions about hotels.

You say not too expensive.

For a group of 20 something I would choose the Khao Sans rd area. Good night life, friendly area and much cheaper for a beer and food.

I prefer you stay at Sukhumvit or Silom areas, you can so shopping, eating, sightseeing and have some entertainment around there.

You'll have easier to go shopping and clubs/bars if you stay in Sukhunvit area; skytrain is very handy for ex between MBK mall and Sukhumvit and bars are withing walking distance.

Another nice and easy way, often forgotten also, is using the klong that starts/ends next to Pratunam (and best money exchange offices) and runs parallel with Sukhumvit. See the map.

We stayed at two different hotels. We first stayed at Sukhumvit to do all the shopping, etc since it was near the BTS. Then we stayed at a boutique hotel in the old part of Bangkok near the temples, etc.
