Buying International Foods in Bangkok Supermarkets

Hi there,

I am going to Asia for a month and I have allergies to all nuts and fish which means my food choice is going to be very limited. I am going on an organised tour through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and will often be in rural areas without access to western foods so I am hoping to be able to buy packet soups, cereal bars etc... in Bangkok and take these with me on the tour. Can anyone recommend which supermarkets in Bangkok will have international brands of these foods (so I know exactly what I am eating)?

Any tips will be appreciated!

Thank you.

Tops Market at Centrel World, Centrel Chidlom or any of the Centrels actually.

Gourmet Market at Paragon and Emporium.

VillaMarkets should do what you want. There are two in the Sukhumvit area, one on Soi 11 and the other in the Ploenchit mall (sorry, I don't remember the name). There is another large international market off Sukhumvit around Soi 8, but I have forgotten the name. If you google VillaMarket Bangkok, you should find exact locations.

Problem is, the familiar brands you trust may well be manufactured in Thailand or neighbouring countries under license, with changes in the formula to cater to local taste.

I 2nd what 10/6 wrote.

The idea of food allergies is foreign in Asia and the thought of people dying if they eat the wrong food is beyond foreign.

I have seen a lot of international brands available at supermarkets in Bangkok. Check out the Tesco supermarket as well as the Big C...

Yes Treshi, the same brands are here but you still need to check the package carefully. As bill2p correctly pointed out they may not be imported from the UK but made locally, usually in Malaysia and could have a different recipe. Take Doritos chips for example, they just started making them in Thailand and they are nothing like the proper imported ones, the taste and texture are very different.
