Place to stay near Don Mueng Airport?

We will need a place for one night - can anyone recommend a place that's close to the airport but also situated in a good area to explore for an overnight. Flight is not real early so it doesnt have to be right by the airport - just less than a 30 minute drive or so. Mid-range price is fine - does not need to be high-end, or particularly cheap. Thanks in advance!

Amari Hotel Don Muang is definitely spot on. Directly connected to the airport. Not as good as it once was, but for me it was worth every penny.

If you're looking for location (around Don Muang is not really much to explore), just go to Sukhumvhit area. From Don Muang take the airbus to Mo Chit (30-50 Baht) and then Skytrain to Sukhumvit. Check the numerous lists here to select a hotel of your likes/budget.

Don't bother with Sukhumvit. It's out of your way and it's not the centre of Bangkok as many here seem to think. Get a hotel near Victory Monument. Here are some suggestions: atsiam.com/en/…victory_monument_thailand.asp

From DMK you can take the A2 bus directly to Victory Monument for 30 baht. Or take either the A1 or A2 bus to Mo Chit and then take the BTS Skytrain to Victory Monument.

There's lots to see and do in the evening. For one thing VM is a huge street food and restaurant nexus. The boat noodles by the canal are legendary. travelfish.org/blogs/… Kuang Seafood on Soi Rangnam is considered one of the best seafood restaurants in the city. eatingthaifood.com/2011/… Or the fabulous Issan restaurant Lan Isaan Lom Yen also on Soi Rangnam: eatingthaifood.com/2011/…

In addition, it's a big shopping venue with a whole cluster of Thai-oriented malls from the old-fashioned Fashion Mall to the newfangled mall around the Century Cinema, plus all street shopping spread out along Phaya Thai Road in the evenings and up on the Skywalk.

Last but not least is a popular farang watering hole, the Saxophone with live jazz, big band or blues depending on the night.

VM is seething with light and colour all day and far into the night. It's a great area to explore.

Thank you both for your responses! Victory Monument sounds more appealing for us, and many thanks for the restaurant and hotel tips. I will investigate and report back with questions or answers :). The jazz club sounds fun too. Thanks so much, Bill!

Any issues with a late night check-in? The reason I'm asking is because on one of the hotel booking sites it lists the check-in from 06:00 to 00:00. We wouldn't arrive until after 01:00 at the best
