I've looked into Centara Grand at Central World & Royal Orchid Sheraton, both 5* but unaware of exact location other than Centara Grand being listed as having "City views & direct access to Central World Mall"

JW Marriott Sukhumvit soi 2 walking distance to sky train and night market which sets up along Sukhumvit road every night.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel (Riverside), Possibly my favourite hotel in Bangkok

Both of the above hotels though are expensive.

The Landmark Hotel Bangkok 138 Sukhumvit Road, Sukhumvit Very close to sky train and night market sets up right outside the hotel, (IMHO one of the most conveniently located hotels in Bangkok) and a bit cheaper than Marriott and Mandarin Oriental.

The thing is that I don't know where the road blocks are amd dom't want to get stuck on the middle of the demonstrations.

I stayed at the Shangri la in Feb 2009 when there were demonstrations happening in the city and never noticed anything.

This appears to be old but I second the Mandarin Oriental -- right on the river. Great Sunday brunch. Peninsula across the river is nice too.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We are already back home after having stayed at the Eastin Grand Sathorn - great hotel with bridge directly from the hotel to the Surasak bts station.
