Markets near MBK?

Hi guys,

Are there any markets near MBK? We are staying at Pathumwan Princess so it would be great to know if there are some nearby that we could possibly walk to.

Thanks :)

Do you mean besides the huge MBK mall nearby? You can take hours walking around that place alone. Restaurants, supermarkets, vendors, etc. And air conditioned!

Yeah, when you are standing on the upper level of the Skytrain stop you will see other places to visit. The Skytrain can take you to other areas in Bangkok too.

Hehe...yes...apart from MBK! We love the atmosphere of a good night market and were hoping we could easily walk to one without needing to use public transport one evening.

Of course Siam Square is a big market for youthful fashions every evening, with street vendors clustered around the BTS station.

There are food carts around Ratchathewi BTS but not really a night market as such.

That's all I can think of in the immediate vicinity of MBK.

The Skytrain will take you the the Patpong area for the night market. The Skytrain can take you to the Nana/Asoke area for street vendor shopping and other things. Probably 25 - 35 baht. Terminal 21 Mall is in this area. Nana street vendors are often cheaper than Patpong market.

(No Skytrain after midnight.)

Dont ever go to Patpong market. You'll never see a thai buying anything there for the obvious reason. And Silom & Sukhumvit st stalls are a waste of time - unless one has no time and doesn't mind paying much more.

As advised above, just wander around Siam from 8-9pm onwards as lots of clothing is sold along Rama 1 taking most of the walking areas.

If you want a more interesting night market experience go down to Memorial Bridge on the river and check out the night market there and also the infamous flower market. But that involves a taxi or the 73 (orange) aircon bus (which departs outside MBK on Rama 1 and terminates at the Memorial bridge/Flower market. A good time to go would be around 8pmish. There are dozens of night markets around the city but this would be the closest to MBK - being 4kms away.

Floyd, just out of curiosity, why do you characterize the flower market as "infamous?"

Patpong Night Market is for tourists! Ordinary Thais don't need that tourist junk. I personally think that the tourist junk sold on Sukhumvit (Nana area) is a little cheaper than Patpong. But I haven't had a reason to be in Patpong for a while.

During day hours and early evening, Pratunam area, Phetchaburi Road, has a lot of vendors, malls and wholesalers. If shopping is your thing you will find stores and vendors to keep you happy.

But, unlike the Nana area of Sukhumvit, I think Pratunam is a little dead after 9 PM.

Have fun.

Yes, everybody is right. Patpong night market is expensive and you can mostly buy exactly the same stuff in places such as MBK for a great deal less without the hassle.

It's worth a visit to the area however for a wander around and maybe stop for a drink or and a meal, sit outside the restaurant and watch the very colourful world go by.

Forget about Patpong and the Sukhumvit Road night markets. Both are absolute crap. You can buy the same stuff in MBK in air conditioned comfort without the hassle. For that matter, Tesco/Lotus stores are also a good option at fixed low prices. Try the one located next to the On Nut BTS stop.
