Very Simple.

Take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani (it would be better if you take the evening train 7.30 pm, from the Hua Lamphong). Air conditioned Upper-Lower sleeper will be just fine for this journey as it is very comfortable.

It also saves money as the ticket is only around (upper 750, lower 850 per person) THB.

The journey is around of 11-12 hour.

You will reach at Surat Thani by 7.30 am. Beside the Surat Thani train station you can get Seatran or Lomprayah ferry packages that is very good & cheap too & convenient (450 THB per person). The package consists of bus from Surat Thani to ferry station & the ferry cost too from Donsak Pier to Nathong Pier at Koh Samui. The bus journey is of 1.30 hour to 2 hour. Lomprayah Ferry is faster, which will take less than an hour. Seatran ferry is big and comparatively slower, which may take around 2 hours.

You will also get drop services from the Ferry Station to hotel at Koh Samui which will take extra cost. If you want to go by local transport, it is also available and comparatively cheaper.

or instead of a 15-16 hr journey by train, bus & ferry as described above, you could fly there direct within 60 minutes

Even when you are on a small budget, there are times when it makes sense to spend some money.

11-12 hours?! That sounds like hell to me! Instead, grab a flight with Bangkok Airways, you will be in Samui in 60 minutes.

I do love a train journey and have indeed done this particular journey. Another cheaper alternative than flying direct to Samui is to fly to Surat Thani and get the bus/ferry transfer. When you have a family of 4 flying direct to Samui can become extremely expensive.

Yes, Bangkok Air will take around 9500 THB for the round trip. in this train-bus-ferry, u will need only THB 2500 for the same.

I have never paid 9500 THB for the round trip, most I have paid was 7000 THB.

Hi

From experiences ( have use them nearly 20 years, as it's only airliens that fly between my hometown and Bangkok ) with Bangkok airways the fares are depends on time of week/year, restricted or flexible, destinations and when you book it. We ( 2 pax) just booked for end of year for 5 flights and cost us just over 30,000 baht tax and charges inclusive.

I didn't think is too bad as it save us lots of travel time. If you have short holiday then flying is the best IMHO.
