From Bangkok to Chiang Mai by train

Hello,

I and my husband are planning to take the train from bangkok to Chaing mai in June 2010. We will be flying from Phnom Penh to Bkk via Air asia and our flight reached bangkok at 6.30 pm.( hoping it does not get delayed). I could not find any other flight that could reach earlier.

How much time does it take to reach the train station form the airport(BKK)?

What is the fastest way to travel from the airport to the train station?

Is it safe enought to book the train after reaching the station. I was planning to book the 8pm train to chiang mai which is a rapid train? Is it good?

Any suggestions are helpful.

Thanks

The 8:10 pm train doesn't go to Chiang Mai. There is a 7:30 pm (which is impossible to make with a 6:30 pm flight arrival) and a 10 pm train.

The safest bet is to get a taxi to the train station, especially if you plan to purchase your ticket once you get there. June is low season, but one never knows how many spots might be open.

Where did you get the idea you can travel from the airport to Hualumpong in 28 minutes at that time of say? It would take 28 minutes to travel part of the way along Rama 4 Road. And the same applies to Bang Su, which is located in a traffic snarled area with narrow roads.

AA flights can run late sometimes so you are definitely not leaving enough time!

Book the 10pm train and give yourself some time. Catch a meter taxi straight to the main train station from the airport. Depending on traffic it could take you ages!!!

From memory our last trip took about 45 min... but its not leaving you enough time to get some food, get your luggage, etc etc..

Once at the train station you can get some food to take on the train with you and some beers/cool drinks and if you make it in good time there is a little massage shop in the main terminal.. great to get a foot massage before jumping on the train for the night!

Sorry but as someone who knows the area inside out, Google is way off course when it comes to the amount of time it will take. And construct of a new skytrain around Bang Su doesn't help the congestion.. When giving advise to people, its better to have good local knowledge rather than rely on something from the internet

I can vouch for the time.

I had a taxi booked to take me to the Train Station, it did not turn up but luckily i had plenty of time to get another one.

I could not believe the traffic it was hectic, very slow.

Leave plenty of time as Dragon suggested.
