Best area to stay in Chiang Mai

Hi

Is there any one good place to stay in Chiang Mai?? Haven't noticed the city being broken down into districts much.

We are hoping for a good night scene but not too rowdy??

Any places to look out for nearby to the hotels that will suggest it is handy to shops, bars, transport links etc?

Thanks

Debi

Hi Debi,

I think you'll find CM is not a big city in that you need to be near transport links etc. It is very laid back - just jump in the back of a songthaew or a tuk tuk where ever you are in the city to get around.

There are distinct districts but none are very far from each other so it is easy to get from A to B.

The old city is a popular area to stay - it is about 1.5km square and has no high rise. Lots of backpacker places, B&B's and beautiful boutique hotels. It is great for wandering around and exploring. Lots of temples, coffee shops, little restaurants, bookshops etc. It is quieter around here at night.

The other popular area is the night market area. There is a large concerntration of massage places, bars, places to eat and drink. All the usual fast food places are around here. During the day the area is pretty ordinary. Around 5.30pm the stalls are setting up and at night it buzzes with people and colour.

The riverside is also a nice option - some accommodation spread out along both sides of the river. Over the river from the night market there are a number of popular places to drink and hear live music.

As mentioned - none of these areas are far from each other and it is easy to get around.

Caroline.

Personally, I've always liked staying around the end of Moon Muang Soi 1 or Soi 2. Soi 2 actually curves and runs into Soi 1 at the end. This is a good neighbourhood with a selection of guesthouses, and restaurants from local->budget->upscale. For mid-range (300-500baht), I recommend T-Room and Kritsada guesthouses, but there are others as well. Right at the end of the Sois, there are some tasteful laid back places to drink like the Lost Hut where there aren't girls etc hassling you, and the music is actually good. At the the top end of Soi 2, there is more of a selection of more-typical type bars.

ps. the Soi 1 and 2 mentioned above are in the old city, near the Tha Phae Gate entrance to the city.

(in case you didn't make that connection).

We usually always stay at the Imperial Mae Ping. Although it does have a rather boisterous night scene right in the vicinity (muai thai nights can be loud and you may hear it in the room) it is close to the night bazaar and 10 mins walk to the moat and main gate into the city.

The hotel itself is nice, 2 pools and brilliant spa. We have stayed in 3 hotels in chiang mai and besides the costly The Chedi, this is our favourite. I do however press that there are some wonderful guest houses in the city and you should look into it well :).

Have a great stay, might see you at the hotel in november. :D
