Chang Mai hotels and stay

Am planning to spend 4-5 days in Chang Mai. Any hotel/guest house recommendations please? Around the 40/50EUR mark. Also would welcome suggestions for alternatives for getting back to Bangkok rather than the plane. Any interesting towns on the way down by using the train?

Thanks in advance

We are going to be staying at 3 SIS in December. 1800 baht/night. All e-mails have been responsive....even called and spoke with them on the phone.Cheers, Ronnie

Have not been there.......but a worthwhile stop seems to be SUHKOTHAI. Check it out!

We took the overnight train from Bangkok to Chang Mai. Nice country scenery on the way and your seats fold into sleeping births. You are riding with the locals and many tourists, so there is lots of interesting conversations. There are several stops to pick up passengers on the way and the locals board at each stop to sell you food. There is also food service available on the train itself. Nothing fancy, but certainly a cultural experience. Very inexpensive to ride the train. We went to the train station and purchased our tickets the day of departure. There is also a travel agency that can help with hotel reservations and booking other activities in Chang Mai for you.

We stayed at De Naga Hotel in the past couple of weeks. Quite impressive. Authentic and nice and quiet.

RE. your enquiry about getting back to Bangkok, there is a new luxury coach that goes overnight to Bangkok. Seats recline (I believe), there are seat back TVs and hostess service at your seat. Coach takes a total of 24 people only I believe. By coincidence, I saw it starting its journey last night and it does look very impressive.

There are plenty pof places where you could potentially stop off on the way back to Bangkok, but most buses will probably travel down to Lampang - itself, an interesting city - before heading off down Route 1, along the western side of the country, taking in some generally rather uninteresting places. Sukothai would be a great place to visit, but you'd need to change buses somewhere to get there.

There's loads to see and do here in CNX. Why not spend more time here, or alternatively, if you want to see a bit more of the country, spend a few days on the beach at Hua Hin, south of Bangkok? Much nicer than Samui IMHO. There is a bus direct from Chiang Mai.
