We like to escape New York weather from late Jan. to early March and have taken 6-7 weeks trips since retirement 4 years ago. Last winter we spent 5 days in Luang Probang, 19 days in Cambodia, and 18 days in Vietnam. PERFECT.
We are considering Thailand for this winter and wonder which area(s) might make a good 2-3 week extension to about 3-4 weeks in Thailand. In Thailand we thought to visit Bangkok, Chang mai region, and a Phuket area and surrounds so we will visit city, mountains, and beach for snorkeling.
As far as extension areas, we have some concerns about political issues, terrorism, transportation ease, etc and wonder about safety in Burma (perhaps with a cruise on the Irawaddy River), Calcutta (we missed this area on our 8 week trip to India a few years ago), or Bali and Ubud in Indonesia.
Would appreciate advice about safety for low key non-tour group travelers in 60s in Thailand and surrounding areas and which extended areas to visit. We figure the flood problems will subside by late January. We like to hire private guides with transport.
I would love Bhutan or Tibet but suffer from altitude sickness so I try to limit very high elevation areas.
